2027: Disquiet in Niger as Christians protest marginalization, make demands

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Christian leaders in Niger State have publicly raised concerns over what they describe as political marginalization, warning that the issue could undermine unity and inclusiveness in the state's politics.

According to reports, the leaders allege that internal political arrangements such as consensus candidacies and zoning have been used to sideline qualified Christian aspirants from contesting for key elective positions. They argue that this pattern has left many Christians feeling excluded from the state's political process.

Among their key demands are:

  • Equal opportunities for Christians to contest and occupy elective offices.
  • An end to political practices they believe unfairly disadvantage Christian aspirants.
  • Greater inclusiveness and fairness by political parties in selecting candidates.
  • A commitment from political stakeholders to promote religious balance and peaceful coexistence.

The group warned that continued exclusion could heighten religious and political tensions if not addressed before the 2027 elections. However, the reported concerns represent the views of the protesting Christian leaders, and there has been no indication in the report that the political parties or the Niger State government have formally responded to the allegations.
