Nigerian Govt suspends WAEC, NECO fees hike amid backlash
The Federal Government has suspended the proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination after widespread public criticism.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education:
- The June 18, 2026 letter approving the fee adjustment has been withdrawn.
- The suspension is intended to allow for broader consultations with key stakeholders before any final decision is made.
- Those to be consulted include examination bodies, state ministries of education, school owners, parents' associations, organised labour, and other education stakeholders.
The proposed policy would have raised the registration fee for both WAEC and NECO to ₦50,000 per candidate from 2027—an increase from about ₦27,000 for WAEC and ₦30,000 for NECO. The proposal sparked strong opposition from parents, student groups, labour organisations, and politicians, who argued it would make secondary education less affordable.
The ministry said the proposed increase was driven by rising costs of conducting examinations, including logistics, security, printing, technology deployment, and quality assurance. However, it stressed that no fee increase will take effect until the consultation process is completed and a final decision is reached.
